Challenges of Building Wash Down Packaged Lift Station for Breweries

Taylor Pump Stations builds wash down packaged lift stations for breweries. We know very well what a challenge these type of facilities pose for the packaged lift station supplier.

The crisp, hoppy splash of a cold brew on a summer’s day is truly refreshing, but the “liqueur”, the liquid by-product from the brewing process is not! Breweries produce this waste liquid in the breakdown of organics, the liquid mash of the hops. It contains a number of chemical pollutants and has a high ph making it very caustic. It is not even fit for even the public sewage treatment system! the DEQ imposes strict guidelines for its release into public treatment plants.

The wet wells we build for breweries are also considered holding wells. Food or beverage processing holding wells, can be part of the solution to lower the ph of waste liquid that will eventually flow in a fish bearing streams. Taylor Pump Stations designs brewery wastewater lift station with holding time in mind.

Example Brewery Project

Because of our expertise in building packaged lift stations to the highest specifications, IWS Engineering hired us for a brewery project. Located in Portland Oregon, IWS Engineering, is a team of experienced engineers. The brewery needed to come into compliance with an DEQ discharge compliance order. After consulting with IWS engineers as to the controls and barrier considerations to reduce the effects of ph and bio chemical oxygen demand or “bod,” the team at Taylor Pump Stations went to work. Our stations are “Taylor Built” with easily adjustable float grips, for quick setting of flow control switches. Stainless steel guides and support brackets are specified to be 316 s.s we also coat embeds stand off supports with an envirogreen™️ high build epoxy. Because of these extras, our lift station will stand up to many years of smooth use even as components come in contact with corrosive as well as hot liquid.

Packaged Lift Station for Breweries Can Get You Into Hot Water.

That statement may be a little play on words but is a very relevant to the trouble one can get in to when building a wastewater lift station for the processing of organic waste from the beer industry.

The wash down water temperature from processing is generally in the range of 150-175 degrees and this produces a host of challenges for the packaged wastewater lift station builder. The protection level of each individual component of the wet well must careful considered.
